Nunona Introduces Better Postpartum Nutrition

We’ve translated the science into real solutions. New moms can trust the quality nutrition behind Nunona's Mama Balls. Ingredients are selected to help provide baby the essential building blocks for brain development, healthy growth and a strong immune system. This starts long before baby takes their first bite! That’s why we are focused on nourishing new moms.

The quality of the maternal diet affects the profile of breastmilk (1). So are lactation cookies really what they seem? We looked at the top 5 lactation cookies to see.

Do lactation cookies really work?

The general claim from a lactation cookie is that they can help you make more breastmilk. If you're a new mom navigating breastfeeding or if you are struggling to produce, that’s a compelling proposition. But it’s also a proposition that hasn't been clinically proven. Want to increase your quantity? The only thing proven to work is to increase your frequency of breast emptying (2).

Nutrition hasn't been proven to increase the quantity of your breastmilk, frequency of feeding has (2).

What we do different.

As an evidence-based brand, we aren’t making unproven claims.

You deserve a better bite!

Optimal nutrition is not only important for baby, but also critical for the wellbeing of mom.

With so much focus on the baby, we tend to forget that we’ve just undergone a major physical event ourselves. Protein is essential for tissue repair and it’s important to ensure you are consuming enough of it postpartum (3,4).

With a range of 2 -5g of protein per serving, lactation cookies provide little protein.

What we do different.

We prioritize your nutrition as much as we prioritize breast milk quality. Nunona Mama Balls are packed with 8g of protein on average per daily serving, which equates to over 10% of the daily protein needs for lactating women.

Quality Matters for Baby

What you eat matters. The quality of your diet has been proven to impact the quality of your breastmilk. This is because some nutrients can’t be supplied by your body, they have to come from your diet. These nutrients include vitamin A, some B vitamins, iodine, selenium and certain fatty acids (5). All of which are important nutrients for babies developing brain and body.

How the cookie crumbles?

The nutritional content of lactation cookies is lacking. They provide a quick energy burst in the form of processed carbohydrates which can poorly affect your blood sugar levels. And while the majority do contain some added micronutrients, the fat provided in lactation cookies is the unhealthy kind.  Not the brain boosting Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids you want to look for.

What we do different.

The fatty acids provided in Mama Balls come from organic nut butters and ground flaxseed, providing plant based sources of Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids. We also include sources for B vitamins, iron and selenium to help support babies' growing brain and body.

Creating a sweet tooth?

Our diets don’t only influence the profile of breastmilk, but they impact the flavor of it too. Eating a varied diet can expose your baby to many different flavors through your breastmilk. Breastfed infants from mothers who consume a variety of flavors tend to be less picky, more willing to try new foods and may even affect their preference for certain flavors when they are an adult (6)! We all know that too much sugar isn’t healthy. But did you know that it can also shape babies' flavor preferences?

How the cookie crumbles?

Lactation cookies are loaded with sugar. They average 20-30% of pure sugar per bite!

What we do different.

We’ve developed a range of flavors inspired by superfoods. From sweet to savory, Nunona Mama Balls contain only 2g of added sugar per serving sourced from organic maple syrup. Only 3% of our calories come from added sugar. And our range of superfood flavors from coconut, cacao, to lemon and matcha help provide flavor variety for both you and baby. Mama Balls are a healthy part of your postpartum diet, and provide nutrition that you can feel good about!

It’s time for better postpartum nutrition
